The most powerful DDoS attack in history was blocked by GoogleGoogle Cloud announced that it managed to repel the largest distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack in history. Apparently, in this attack, the hacker was able to create 46 million requests per second and was trying to access the Internet-based services of one of the search engine giant's customers.
In a new Google blog post, product manager Emil Keener and Google Cloud CTO Satya Kondoro explain:
"To better understand the scale of this attack, it's like if all of Wikipedia's daily requests were received in just 10 seconds."
Google added that the attack was 76 percent more powerful than the previous one reported by Cloudflare last month. At the time, the company had managed to tackle a new botnet called "Mantis" that was making 26 million requests per second.
Hackers use DDoS attacks to take websites and applications offline by sending millions of requests to a service. The Google Cloud incident first started with an attack that created about 10,000 requests per second, and then this amount increased to 100,000 requests per second about eight minutes later.
Google's response to the most powerful DDoS attack
Google's anti-DDoS network security service Cloud Armor raised an alert immediately after the attack, allowing it to block the hacker's web traffic. Keener and Kondoro explain further in this post:
"Over the next two minutes, the attack began to ramp up, going from 100,000 requests per second to a peak of 46 million requests per second."
Despite the sheer power of the attack, Google explains that the hackers were unable to disrupt its customer service.
In its investigation, Google concluded that the DDoS attacks were carried out by the Meris botnet, which consisted of hundreds of thousands of infected Internet modems and routers made by MikroTik. It is said that this botnet was created due to the vulnerability of this company's products and it allows hackers to remotely control the device.
Google announced the attack and the success of its Cloud Armor security service as companies may be more interested in protecting against DDoS attacks, as previous reports suggest that they have become more common this year.
